The DETOUR sign should be used for unnumbered highways, for emergency situations, for periods of short durations, or where, over relatively short distances, road users are guided along the detour and back to the desired highway without route signs. Advanced warning signs should be deployed at all emergency scenes to advise motorists that emergency response units are working on or near the roadway. These items should be deployed at a predetermined distance from the apparatus in a manner that does not create additional hazards. Department policy will dictate safety procedures to be in place for deploying these items.
